The film starts by looking at the cattle husbandry problems associated with tropical parasites (ticks in particular) affecting European cattle in tropical areas of Australia. The Australian Milking Zebu breed of cattle was developed by the CSIRO by cross breeding the high milk producing European cattle with tick resistant Asian breeds.
The film also looks at the introduction of 'red sindhi' and 'sahiwal' breeds to Australia. Then follows the processes by which these cattle breeds were cross bred with Jerserys to develop tick and heat resistant cattle.
Includes footage of the CSIRO McMaster Field Station (Armidale, NSW), Wollongbar Agricultural Research Centre near Alstonville (Northern NSW) and the Wacol Artificial Insemination Centre (Wacol, QLD).
The research programme was directed by Dr JM Rendel, chief of the former Division of Animal Genetics (CSIRO). The film acknowledges the assistance of the New South Wales Department of Agriculture, the Queensland Department of Primary Industries and members of the Australian Milking Zebu Co-operative. Produced for the CSIRO Division of Animal Production by the CSIRO Film and Video Centre.
