The Old Gum Tree in Glenelg is a significant historical site in South Australia. It is believed to be the location of the proclamation that established the government in South Australia as a British province. The proclamation was delivered on 28 December 1836 by the British governor Captain John Hindmarsh. Each year a ceremony is held on this site to celebrate Proclamation Day and the original speech by Governor Hindmarsh is read out.
