For the test, judged by Messrs Cobb & Hadfield, ploughman Gunning had to beat the competition at single and double furrow work using teams of two and three Clydesdales. Gunning is attaching the reins (which are rope rather than leather with working horses) to the off-side (RHS) of the bit. He has not yet "put-to", that is, the harnessing is not affixed to the plough as yet because you can see the trace chains hanging from the backband (to the left of Gunning's elbow in the photo) and the loop of chain hanging below the horse on the other side of the photo. Once he has finished tying that knot he'll gather those reins and walk to the rear of the horses, unhooking those chains from the backband and hooking them onto the swingle bar behind the horses. You can see that swingle lying on the ground to the left of the photo and that chain will hook into a loop at the end of that bar. So this photo was taken before he started his ploughing in the competition. For the test, judged by Messrs Cobb & Hadfield, ploughman Gunning had to beat the competition at single and double furrow work using teams of two and three Clydesdales.
